The organic pre-treatment room is a specialized area in the laboratory for preprocessing organic samples.
I. Functions and Roles
Sample extraction: Using methods such as liquid-liquid extraction and solid-phase extraction to extract target organic compounds from complex sample matrices, such as extracting organic pesticide residues from water samples.
Concentration and purification: Concentrate the extracted samples by means of rotary evaporation, nitrogen blowing, etc., to increase the concentration of target substances; at the same time, use gel permeation chromatography, solid-phase extraction columns and other means to remove impurities and purify the samples, so as to provide a pure sample solution for subsequent analysis.
II. Common Equipment and Instruments
Rotary evaporator: Used to evaporate and concentrate sample solutions under reduced pressure. The rotating flask forms a thin film of the solution, which increases the evaporation area and improves the concentration efficiency.
Nitrogen blower: Uses a stream of nitrogen to quickly blow dry the solvent in the sample solution to achieve sample concentration, and is suitable for concentration treatment of small-volume samples.
III. Reagents and Consumables
Organic solvents: Such as methanol, acetonitrile, acetone, n-hexane, etc., are commonly used extractants and solvents in organic pre-treatment. According to the principle of like dissolves like, they are used to extract and dissolve organic compounds with different properties.
Solid-phase extraction columns: Small columns filled with different stationary phases, such as C18 columns, silica gel columns, ion exchange columns, etc., are used for sample purification and enrichment.
IV. Safety Precautions
Fire and explosion prevention: Most organic solvents in the organic pre-treatment room are flammable and explosive. Open flames and static electricity should be avoided. All electrical equipment should have explosion-proof functions, and combustible gas alarms should be installed in the room.
Toxicity protection: Many organic reagents are toxic. Operators must wear appropriate protective equipment, such as gloves, masks, goggles, etc., and operate in a well-ventilated fume hood to prevent organic vapors from harming the human body.
