I. Basic Information
Definition: A needle flame tester is a device used to simulate small flames generated inside products under fault conditions to assess the risk of ignition. It is mainly used to test the flame retardancy of electrical products, building materials, etc.
Components: It usually consists of a needle flame burner, a working chamber, a temperature measuring device, and other parts.
II. Working Principle
A needle-shaped burner with a specified size (Φ0.9mm) is used, and a specific gas (such as 95% butane gas) is passed through it. The burner applies flame to the test sample at a 45° angle at a fixed time and direction. The risk of ignition caused by small flames under fault conditions inside the equipment is evaluated by observing whether the test sample is ignited, the afterflame time, and the burning length.
III. Technical Indicators
Needle-shaped burner: Inner hole Φ0.5mm±0.1mm, outer diameter ≤Φ0.9mm, length ≥35mm, made of stainless steel.
Burner angle: Tilted at 45° (during the test) or vertical (when adjusting the flame height).
Flame application time: 0-999.9s±0.1s adjustable, generally 30s is selected.
Afterflame time: 0-999.9s±0.1s, automatically recorded, manually paused.
Flame height: 12mm±1mm, with a height measuring instrument.
Flame application gas: 95% butane gas, bottled lighter gas can be used.
Temperature measurement range: 0-1000℃.
Flame temperature requirement: The time to rise from 100℃±2℃ to 700℃±3℃ is within 23.5 seconds ±1 second.
Temperature measuring thermocouple: Φ0.5mm imported armored (K-type) thermocouple.
Test background: Black background, background illuminance ≤20Lux.
Test process: The test procedure is automatically controlled with independent ventilation.
Working chamber volume: Usually 0.5m3, and can also be customized to 0.75m3 or 1m3 according to customer requirements.
IV. Scope of Application
Electrical and electronic equipment: Suitable for research, production, and quality inspection departments of electrical and electronic equipment and their parts and components, such as lighting, low-voltage electrical appliances, household appliances, machine tool electrical appliances, motors, power tools, electronic instruments, electrical meters, electrical connectors, and accessories.
Insulating materials and engineering plastics: It can be used in the industries of insulating materials, engineering plastics, or other solid combustible materials to test the flame retardancy of these materials under the action of small flames.

Commonly applicable standards include GB/T5169.5, GB4706.1, IEC60695-11-5, etc.
