I. Basic Concepts and Uses
The nickel release abrasion tester is a professional device used to detect the release amount of nickel elements in metal or coated products. It is mainly applicable to products that are in long-term contact with human skin (such as jewelry, watches, eyeglass frames, mobile phone cases, etc.). Nickel is a common allergenic metal. The EU REACH regulations, EN 1811 and other standards have strict restrictions on nickel release (for example, jewelry ≤ 0.5μg/cm2/week). Therefore, this instrument evaluates the risk of nickel release from products by simulating daily wear scenarios.
II. Equipment Structure and Working Principle
Core Structure
Abrasion device: Usually includes a rotating grinding head (made of wool felt, cotton cloth or specific friction materials), which can adjust pressure and rotation speed to simulate skin friction.
Sample clamping system: Fix the sample (such as metal sheets, jewelry parts) to ensure uniform force on the worn position.
Corrosive medium circulation system: Provide simulated sweat (containing sodium chloride, lactic acid and other components) to accelerate the nickel release process.
Control system: Set parameters such as wear time, rotation speed, pressure, temperature, etc., and automatically record data.
Collection and detection module: The worn solution needs to be tested for nickel content by instruments such as atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) or inductively coupled plasma (ICP).
Working Principle
The grinding head exerts constant pressure on the sample surface and rotates, while spraying simulated sweat, so that the coating or metal substrate on the sample surface releases nickel ions under the combined action of wear and corrosion. The worn solution is collected, and the nickel release amount is calculated through chemical analysis to determine whether it meets the safety standards.
III. Technical Parameters and Standards
Parameter Type | Common Indicators |
Abrasion pressure | 10N~50N adjustable (e.g., EN 1811 standard requires 10N) |
Rotation speed | 10~60 rpm (typical value is 20 rpm) |
Abrasion time | 0~100 hours (e.g., EU standards require testing for 48 hours or 168 hours) |
Simulated sweat composition | Contains 0.5% sodium chloride, 0.1% lactic acid, pH value is about 4.7 |
Sample size | Usually required to be ≥ 1cm2, and the thickness is adjusted according to the product type (e.g., jewelry parts need to be cut to standard size) |
Applicable Standards
EU: EN 1811 (nickel release testing for jewelry), EN 12472 (nickel release testing for coated products)
China: GB/T 19718 (Determination of nickel release from jewelry)
International: ISO 12312-1 (nickel release testing for watches)
V. Typical Application Scenarios
Jewelry industry: Detection of nickel release from metal jewelry such as earrings, necklaces, bracelets to prevent the risk of allergies.
Electronics and electrical appliances: Nickel release testing of coatings on mobile phone cases and laptop borders (such as metal coatings or alloy materials).
Medical devices: Evaluation of nickel release from medical implants and surgical instruments (excessive nickel may cause human rejection reactions).
Daily necessities: Quality control of products in contact with the skin, such as eyeglass frames, watch straps, zippers, etc.
Through the testing of the nickel release abrasion tester, the risk of nickel release from products can be effectively controlled, ensuring compliance with international safety standards and protecting consumers' health.
